While the average teenagers are worrying about keeping up with fashion trends, these two seventeen year old twins, Bianca Venerayan and Danielle Roche are wasting no time in creating them and expanding their portfolios as we speak!

I recently had the pleasure to interview the long lost twins Bianca and Dani, co-founders of the online fashion boutique Plastic Skyline, while their life story seem like a tale on its own, their savvy entrepreneurial knowledge and passion for fashion at a young age is what caught my attention for this month’s special feature.

Based in Toronto City of Canada, Bianca and Dani manage everything from design, creative direction, site creation and maintenance, “basically anything and everything that comes with running your own business” Bianca explains – and the result proves to be a success. Since Plastic Skyline’s launch in 2008 they have been that much more aware of the fashion industry and have developed a new-found passion and drive to engulf themselves into.

With a growing fan base for their styles on the ever-popular “fashion inspiration board” lookbook.nu – the hottest spot for fashionistas on the net, as the members are via invite only – and the inspiration sources and outfit combination possibilities are endless, both Bianca and Dani have become trendsetters globally.

Interview:

What is your source of inspiration?
Our biggest fashion influence is without a doubt the members of lookbook.nu, magazines such as Flare, Nylon, Teen Vogue and Neet also play a big part.

Tell our readers more about Plastic Skyline.
Plastic Skyline is an online shop aimed at the young, quirky, fashionable women.  The average retail prices range from $10-$60, but the shop itself is divided into three parts – Vintage, Remixed and Yours Truly.  While ‘Vintage’ is pretty self-explanatory (it is comprised of items that we thrift ourselves), ‘Remixed’ and ‘Yours Truly’ are a bit more complicated.  ‘Remixed’ is made out of eccentric vintage pieces that are unsellable but still have potential.  Through the reconstruction and additions to the products, we strive to make them more interesting and wearable for the customer.  ‘Yours Truly’ on the other hand, is a collection of garments we design and construct ourselves.  From choosing the fabric to the packaging of the item, we do it all and we love every moment of it!

What have you learned about business to date?
Plastic Skyline has taught us so much over the past 8 months.  Not only have we improved our sewing techniques but our flares for design in fashion, web, and graphics have evolved as well.  However, I think the most beneficial thing we have learned thus far is how to target our market and use technology to the best of our abilities. Through careful advertisement and promotion, Plastic Skyline has only begun to find the success that hopefully awaits it in the near future.

Any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs much like yourselves, who want to start their own online business?
This is going to sound corny, but really anything is possible if you put your mind to it.  The great thing about Plastic Skyline is the team work that goes into it.  Dani is the graphic designer and illustrator and Bianca is the HTML goddess and as a result, you have an aesthetically pleasing website which only contributes to the products Plastic Skyline has to offer. If you are unfamiliar with HTML or graphics software tools, have no fear – Google is your friend!  Besides, everyone has to start somewhere, right?  Have hope and follow your dreams!

Who are your favorite fashion designers?
There are a lot of designers that we love, but the ones that come to mind are: Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney and Tina Kalivas.

What are your immediate future plans?
Dani:
I’m off to university this coming fall, but unfortunately, which university I end up at will forever be a mystery (and by forever, I mean May 28 because that’s my deadline).  At the moment I’m trying to decide between Fashion Communications at Ryerson University and Illustration at The Ontario School of Art and Design.  I’m not quite sure what I’ll end up doing in the future, but hopefully whatever it is, it will be something I love.
Bianca:
I plan on applying at Ryerson University for fashion design/communication or OCAD for visual arts. Other than that, I really don’t have a plan and right now I’m just going with the flow.

Tell us about your personal style.
We usually gravitate towards romantic and girly pieces with unique and edgy details to create kind of a juxtaposition of styles melded into one.  It’s unexpected, but it’s a lot of fun at the same time to constantly be experimenting.

Who are your style icons? What about them inspires you?
The members of lookbook.nu are our main source of style inspirations, though Mary-Kate Olsen and Erin Wasson are also admirable.

What is your basic must-have?
Dani:
Tights/stockings!  I even wear them in the summer sometimes because they’re super practical and often tie an outfit together.
Bianca: I cannot live without a good pair of cowboy boots. I swear to God, every outfit looks good with them. Tank tops in every color come pretty handy as well.

What is the current trend you are experimenting with?
Dani: I don’t care what anyone says, I will forever love studs.  I am also obsessed with ruffles and other girly accents.
Bianca: I love the whole romantic style going on – ruffles, blazers, floral, big bows, feathers… the list goes on forever

A do and a don’t for the moment:
DO’s
Dani: Floral prints are always a ‘do’ in my book
Bianca: Printed leggings and asymmetrical garments (I always wanted to look completely insane but also be fashion forward)

DON’Ts
Dani: crocs will forever be a ‘don’t’.  I don’t understand why there are croc stores opening all over the place – it’s a mystery to me!  I thought this fad would’ve ended a long time ago.
Bianca: don’t would be those disgusting brightly-colored keffiyah/shemagh checkered scarves that every hypebeast seems to own

Any fashion advice for our readers?
Don’t worry about what others think of you and wear what you like!  Be daring and bold because you’re only young once.

Additional comments?
We think everyone should have a twin!  Being able to share clothes and shoes is great and really convenient.  If you don’t have a twin yet, go out and find one because you’re missing out!

So there you have it! Business owner means being a jack-of-all-trades, so hats off to Bianca and Dani for wearing the many different hats and then some! Keep your eyes out on these two young talented Canadian fashion savvy entrepreneurs, where they prove that anything is possible if you put your mind to it! Talk about a chic click!
